Lula downcast after defeat (fiba.com) Updated: 2006-08-21 09:21 HAMAMATSU (FIBA World
Championship) ¨C Lula Ferreira has admitted Brazil could be made to pay for their
opening day defeat to Australia after a disappointing start to their FIBA World
Championship campaign.
Brazil, touted as contenders for the gold medal prior to tip-off, were upset
83-77 by the Australians, who were led by 23 points from Mark Worthington.
"It was a hard blow and it could be expensive for us," coach Ferreira said.
"We played worst than we can. We did not make the most of our best moments in
first half when we were ahead. We did not know how to control the game."
He added: ¡°We made a lot of attacking mistakes, we lost easy points.
Australia capitalised on our lack of anger.
"This is a lost ticket to the round of 16. But we must continue thinking
about the main objective."
Anderson Varejao led the scorers from Brazil with 18, but was left
disappointed by the result.
"We played badly, especially in the last period, where Australia had a
10-point lead. They played well for first time and we made lots of mistakes," he
said.
"We knew that they are going to be difficult, but (not this difficult. This
is part of the even level of the World Championship. We have less of a chance
than before, but we will start to think about the next game."
Guilherme added: "We failed. The Australians grabbed our rebounds and the
scored. It was a hard game. They played well.
"We must in improve defence and attack, where we lost easy points."
"We are going to forget this match and we will start thinking about
Qatar."
