Carlos Arroyo scored 29 points and hit the first of three straight 3-pointers during the game's decisive run Sunday, leading Puerto Rico to an 88-79 victory over Senegal at the basketball world championships.

Elias Ayuso added 20 points for the Puerto Ricans (1-1), who built a big early lead, blew all of it, then recovered to even their record after losing 111-100 to the United States in their opener.

Makhtar N'Diaye and Babacar Cisse each scored 14 points for Senegal (0-2), which got off to a horrendous start

Senegal had come all the way back to grab a 67-66 lead with 6:56 remaining when Malick Badiane capped a 10-0 run with a dunk. But Arroyo, Ayuso and Christian Dalmau all made 3-pointers in a span of just over a minute, giving the Puerto Ricans a 75-67 advantage with under 5 1/2 minutes to go. They were never seriously threatened again.

Puerto Rico scored the game's first 15 points, with Ayuso making three 3-pointers. Senegal didn't get on the board until Sitapha Savane's bucket with 5:48 remaining in the opening quarter, shot only 5-of-23 in the period, and trailed 26-16 heading to the second.

But instead of building on its lead, Puerto Rico seemed to lose its focus, committing a number of silly fouls that allowed Senegal to stay in the game from the foul line. Senegal had only four field goals in the second period, but made 10 free throws and pulled within 44-37 at halftime despite shooting only 9-of-39 (23 percent) in the half.

Senegal then used a 12-2 surge to grab its first lead of the game at 51-50 on a dunk by Ndongo N'Diaye with 4:48 left in the third quarter. Puerto Rico led 66-60 after three.
