GENEVA/TOKYO (FIBA World Championship) - FIBA has decided to suspend basketball player Mark Dickel of New Zealand until and including August 21, 2006.

Dickel will miss the first three games of the FIBA World Championship 2006 in Japan. The decision was made in accordance with sections 6.8.3. and 6.8.5. of the FIBA Internal Regulations governing Doping Control.

The player tested positive for cannabis on the occasion of a game on 12th July 2006 between New Zealand and Australia in Napier, New Zealand.

The testing was carried out by the New Zealand Sports Drug Agency and the result was provided on 11th August 2006.

According to FIBA's doping regulations, which follow the WADA Code, for a first doping violation a player incurs two years of ineligibility.

However, in the case of so-called 'specified substances' like cannabis, and provided the player can demonstrate that he did not intend to enhance his performance by using this specified substance, the range of sanctions is from a warning up to one year of ineligibility.
