Germans put Greece blowout behind them (fiba.com) Updated: 2006-08-19 10:48 HIROSHIMA (FIBA World
Championship) - German national team coach Dirk Bauermann said his team has put
behind them their blowout loss to Greece in the final of the Stankovic Cup,
which also served as the final warmup to the 2006 FIBA World Championship.
Bauermann attributed the 84-47 loss to Greece in China to among other things
an intense practice the day before the game and his team's inability to hit some
makeable shots.
"We know what the conditions were which led to the loss. And we showed in the
other two games that we're on the right track," said the coach, whose team beat
China and Brazil previously in the tournament.
He said the result ended so lopsided also because he used the second half to
allow some of his young players the chance to play against one of the best teams
in Europe. And he is optimistic his experienced squad has brushed aside the
loss.
"We have a lot of veteran players and they know a loss like that will not
hurt them in this tournament," said Bauermann, who has put his troops through
two days of intense practices in Hiroshima prior to their FIBA World
Championship opener against tournament hosts Japan.
German captain Ademola Okulaja confirmed his coach's confidence, adding:
"It's definitely out of our system. We had a very intense practice and we're
looking forward to the tournament."
Bauermann also said his team is not worried about playing in front of a
predominantly Japanese crowd at the Green Arena.
"We have no concern. These guys are professional athletes. If you're scared
about playing in front of 10,000 people then you're in the wrong business," the
coach said.
