The Brazilian soccer league resumes on Wednesday following an interruption for the World Cup in Germany.

Each of the 20 teams in the league played 10 matches from April to the beginning of June, before a season break. The last round of the league will be in December.

Organizers decided to have a World Cup break. Unfortunately for the league, the reason for the interruption was not related to the players absence. Almost all athletes that represented Brazil in World Cup 2006 play abroad. The exceptions are goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni and midfielder Mineiro, players of Sao Paulo, and midfielder Ricardinho, who plays for Corinthians.

A few players in activity in the league were part of the national teams of other countries. That is the case of Tevez and Mascherano, who played in the World Cup for Argentina and have contracts with Corinthians, and Gamarra, a Palmeiras athlete, player of the Paraguay national team.

The exodus of Brazilian players is as old as professional football, but it dramatically increased since the 1980s. Nowadays, the majority of the promising young players, often before 20 years old, are hired by foreign teams. The top destinations are the European countries, particularly Spain, Portugal, Italy, Britain, Germany, France, and the Netherlands. Japan, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine are increasingly important markets.

The Brazilian league goes on without the country's top players. Seven matches will take place Wednesday and other three on Thursday. Cruzeiro leads the league, followed by Internacional, Sao Paulo and Fluminense.
