Portugal's World Cup soccer team was greeted by cheers from thousands of flag-waving fans on their return to Lisbon airport on Sunday.

The Portuguese lost 3-1 to Germany in the third-place play-off, their second-best performance in the history of the tournament.

Luis Figo and Pedro Paulet both announced retirement from international soccer after the game.

"The must be congratulated and cheered," an exited fan told Portuguese television.

He also praised Brazilian coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, saying "What Scolari has done for the country in terms of unity is much more than any politician has done for us. He should stay."

The players were to attend a large party with live music at the Jamor stadium on the outskirts of Lisbon. More than 20,000 fans were expected to flock to the stadium.
