Argentina's Horacio Elizondo will referee Sunday's World Cup final between Italy and France, the FIFA said on Thursday.

The third-place match between Germany and Portugal in Stuttgart on Saturday will be officated by Japan's Toru Kamikawa.

Elizondo, a 42-year-old physical education teacher, officiated Portugal's quarterfinal victory over England, when he sent off England striker Wayne Rooney for stepping on Portugal defender Ricardo Carvalho.

The Argentine official was also in charge of the opening match on June 9, when hosts Germany beat Costa Rica 4-2 in Munich.

He will be the first man to referee both the first and last match of a World Cup finals.

Dario Garcia and Rodolfo Otero, also of Argentina, will work the sidelines for the match at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.

The linesmen for the third place match will be Yoshikazu Hiroshima of Japan and Kim Dae-young of South Korea.
