Argentine referee chosen for World Cup final (Xinhua) Updated: 2006-07-07 09:08 Argentina's Horacio Elizondo
will referee Sunday's World Cup final between Italy and France, the FIFA said on
Thursday.
The third-place match between Germany and Portugal in Stuttgart on Saturday
will be officated by Japan's Toru Kamikawa.
Elizondo, a 42-year-old physical education teacher, officiated Portugal's
quarterfinal victory over England, when he sent off England striker Wayne Rooney
for stepping on Portugal defender Ricardo Carvalho.
The Argentine official was also in charge of the opening match on June 9,
when hosts Germany beat Costa Rica 4-2 in Munich.
He will be the first man to referee both the first and last match of a World
Cup finals.
Dario Garcia and Rodolfo Otero, also of Argentina, will work the sidelines
for the match at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
The linesmen for the third place match will be Yoshikazu Hiroshima of Japan
and Kim Dae-young of South Korea.
