About a thousand fans turned up outside Italy's training base Sunday, prompting coach Marcello Lippi to open the doors for an afternoon practice session.

Italy plays Germany in the World Cup semifinals on Tuesday.

At first, only the players who did not appear in Friday's 3-0 quarterfinal win over Ukraine trained. Eventually, the rest of the squad came out and played a nine-on-nine game, with assistant coach Ciro Ferrara refereeing.

Striker Luca Toni, midfielder Mauro Camoranesi, defenders Gianluca Zambrotta and Alessandro Nesta and reserve goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi did not take part.

Nesta is almost sure to miss the Germany game with a right thigh injury, while Peruzzi has been fighting back pain.
