England coach Eriksson predicts victory over Portugal (Ticker) Updated: 2006-06-29 14:45 BADEN-BADEN, Germany - England
coach Sven-Goran Eriksson believes his team will beat Portugal in the World Cup
quarterfinals on Saturday.
The game will be quite a challenge for Eriksson, who has lost against
opposing coach Luiz Felipe Scolari in the quarterfinals of the 2002 World Cup
and Euro 2004. Scolari coached Brazil in 2002 and Portugal in 2004.
"I strongly believe we will win," Eriksson told Sky Sports News. "I've always
believed that and now we are in the quarterfinal and we want to play in the
semifinal and final. I think we can do better, play better and I think we will
stay for a long time yet."
England has been the subject of much criticism for its less than convincing
performances, but that doesn't seem to bother Eriksson.
"I don't care about that (the criticism) and we have a good chance to reach
the semifinal so that is what matters," Eriksson said. "You like to play good
football but the most important thing is to win or you are on the plane home."
