S.Korea, DPRK to discuss unified team in Olympics (Xinhua) Updated: 2006-06-29 10:59
South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) agreed to
hold talks over forming a unified team in December's Asian Games and the 2008
Olympics, South Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) said on Wednesday.
"We agreed to meet in Kaesong tomorrow to organize a unified team for the
upcoming Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, in December, as well as the 2008 Beijing
Olympic Games," the KOC said in a statement.
Vice President of KOC Park Sung-in will lead a five-member delegation to meet
with their DPRK counterparts in DPRK's border city of Kaesong on Thursday
morning, the statement said.
In early June, International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge sent
letters to both South Korean President Roh Moo- hyun and DPRK top leader Kim
Jong Il, urging the two sides to form a single team for the 2008 Beijing Olympic
Games.
In March 2003, officials of both South Korea and DPRK agreed in principle to
form a single team for the 2008 Beijing Olympics in a meeting on the sidelines
of the general assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC)
in Athens.
Last September, officials from South Korea and DPRK agreed that the two sides
would form a unified team for the Asian Games and the Olympic Games.
