Brazil press cheers team's records, warns France to be tough (Xinhua) Updated: 2006-06-29 10:21
Brazil's media on Wednesday cheered the 3-0 Brazil victory over Ghana, which
also gave the team the World Cup goalscoring record, but said that the victory
was misleading because Brazil did not display its best performance against the
Africans.
Brazil, "suffered for most of the game and only avoided goals because of
Dida's strong defense and the African's poor shooting," Correio Braziliense
said.
"Brazil reached the World Cup as the team that everyone wanted to admire and
applaud, but yesterday they were jeered by German soccer fans," Folha de Sao
Paulo said.
Despite playing badly, Brazil won thanks to Ronaldo Nazario who took
advantage of his opportunity, and "because the referee helped us. Adrian was
offside when the second goal was scored."
"Brazil won easily, but without enthusiasm," Estado de Sao Paulo headlined,
repeating an earlier criticism of manger, Carlos Alberto Parreira, saying he had
taught players to confuse haste with speed.
O Globo preferred to look forward with the headline "On Saturday, the
rematch", pointing out that Brazil's next game will be with France, which beat
the team in the 1998 World Cup final.
Brazil broke three records in the Ghana match. Reaching 201 goals in the
World Cup makes it the highest scoring team. It also has a record 11 consecutive
victories, stretching back to the 2002 World Cup held in South Korea and Japan.
Finally, Ronaldo's goal gave him the highest goalscorer record, with 15 goals.
