Police will step up security on the British island of Jersey on Saturday when England plays Portugal in the World Cup quarterfinals to prevent violence involving its Portuguese minority.

Jersey lies off France's west coast and has a population of 90,000. About 6 percent of the residents are from Portugal.

"A significant number of additional officers will be on duty and a firm line will be taken with anyone threatening trouble," Jersey police chief Graham Power said in a statement.

The decision stems from problems on the island during the 2004 European Championship when Portugal beat England. Riot police used tear gas and dogs to disperse about 700 Portugal and England fans who had gathered near a Portuguese club.

Police said 14 people were arrested for offenses like assault, obstructing police and breaching the peace.
