CCTV's Huang: Passionate or out of line? By Wang Wei (chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2006-06-27 16:57
Huang Jianxiang, one of the most famous sports commentators on CCTV (China
Central Television), went "crazy" this morning while broadcasting the World Cup
match between Italy and Australia. Although Huang has always been recognized as
one of the most professional and passionate commentators in China, this time the
brickbats are flying toward him.

commentator Huang Jianxiang [sina.com] |
After Italy's Grosso was awarded a disputed penalty kick during the last two
minutes of stoppage time, Huang roared "PK! PK! PK! Grosso earned it! Grosso
earned it! Don't give Australia any chance! ˇGOAL! Italy has won the match! The
game is over! Australia has been eliminated! They (Italy) didn't lose to
Hiddink's (head coach of Australia) team again, great Italy! Great Italian left
defender, happy birthday Maldini! Long live Italy! They (Australia) should go
home. They don't have to go back to faraway Australia because most of them are
living in Europeˇ
According to a "Quick Vote" on Sina.com, over 32 percent of people say
Huang's support of Italy was biased; 13 percent think some of Huang's words were
inappropriate; but more than fifty percent say Huang's comments were passionate.
Some people say,"Huang is a real man! He can do what he wants to do without
worries! He delivered the point of view that he loves China and Chinese soccer.
He didn't want Australia to win the game because now the Australia team is a
member of the AFC (Asian Football Confederation), and will compete against China
for the next World Cup's qualification. If Australia had won, that would be the
worst news for Chinese soccer."
But some people write in their bloggs that Huang was out of line. He forgot
he is a professional commentator, not a regular fan, they say. He should respect
every team.He shouldn't say, "Long live Italy," he must be a gambler! He should
apologize to all Chinese people! He should be firedˇ
Huang acknowledged after the game that he really did hope Australia would
lose because Australia will be the next strong rival for the Chinese soccer
team. He also said, honestly, that he has commented on the "Italian League" for
many years, and he loves Italy anyway.
"I dislike Australia," Huang said. "Their play is too conservative. Hiddink
was not courageous to beat 10-man Italy. I can't remember what I said and did at
the moment, I am a man not a machine. I can't deal fairly with everything,
that's impossible."
