After showing since 1994, Switzerland hungers for more (AP) Updated: 2006-06-24 20:54 "Spain would have been the more difficult opponent," Switzerland midfielder
Hakan Yakin said. "From what we have seen, they are a top team, and that's why
we are happy we had a great game today."
Spain beat Saudi Arabia 1-0 earlier Friday to win Group H with a perfect nine
points. It will face France, second in Group G, in Hanover on Tuesday.
The Swiss will play Ukraine, led by Andriy Shevchenko, on Monday in Cologne.
Switzerland defender Philippe Senderos, who scored Friday on a header, will
likely be sidelined after falling on his right elbow and damaging his shoulder
against South Korea.
"It doesn't look good for the next game," Kuhn said of Senderos' injury.
Senderos had scored the first goal for his team Friday in the 23rd minute,
butting heads with opposing defender Choi Jin-cheul in a simultaneous knock.
Both players were left bloodied and treated on the sidelines. Choi continued
with a bandage on his head.
Striker Alexander Frei scored Switzerland's second goal in the 77th minute.
The linesman had signaled offside, but the referee overruled and awarded the
goal.
"The referee called an advantage for the striker, because the ball came from
the opponent," Frei said. "Either you believe in it, go on and score or you come
to a stop and then we would have won by just 1-0."
Frei said he was proud to belong to "one of the best 16 teams in the world."
Switzerland had its best World Cup showing as host in 1954 when it reached
the quarterfinals before losing to Austria 7-5 _ that remains a record for the
most goals in a match at the World Cup finals.
