Vietnamese police, especially in big cities, are strengthening operation during the World Cup games to cope with theft, robbery, gambling and motorbike racing, local newspaper Vietnam Sports reported Wednesday.

Since the international soccer tournament started early this month, some people have robbed others to indulge in dissipation or illegally made bets on matches. Besides, burglars have taken advantage of people gluing their eyes to TV during the matches or soundly sleeping after watching them to steal assets.

On June 13 in southern Ho Chi Minh City, two local men robbed a motorbike with knives and money from a couple to cover personal expenses and make bets on soccer games, while three others tried to steal a spare wheel of a private car. Most of the thieves and robbers have been arrested.

In addition to uncovering betting rings and theft cases, Vietnamese police have to make greater preparedness for preventing and combating illegal motorbike races. Some local youths often race in groups during World Cup or any major soccer tournaments, the newspaper said.
