The World Cup website is set for a record-breaking 1.2 billion page views in the first week of the tournament alone, the ruling body FIFA said on Monday.

FIFA said that the entire 2002 tournament saw just over 2 billion page views on FIFAworldcup.com. The 2006 edition runs for another three weeks until July 9.

"Thanks to FIFAworldcup.com we are offering a one-stop destination for all information on and around the World Cup in nine languages. The unparalleled coverage produced by 50 editors from 20 different countries and the wealth and depth of content on FIFAworldcup.com have been recognised by football lovers around the world as the best place to follow the event online," said FIFA boss Joseph Blatter.

FIFA said that an average five million fans have visited the site each day since the June 9 start of the World Cup, with Monday, June 12, the so far best day with 226 page views from 6.2 million users.
