Villa not thinking about being top scorer in World Cup (AP) Updated: 2006-06-19 09:02
STUTTGART, Germany - Being the World Cup's leading scorer is not
Spain striker David Villa's top priority.
The Valencia forward scored two goals in Spain's opening 4-0 win over
Ukraine.
"I don't think about being the top scorer. I want to keep scoring many goals
so that the team can qualify for the second round and then do well in the
knockout stage," Villa said Sunday.
Villa scored with a free kick and a penalty against Ukraine on Monday in
Group H. The team arrived in Stuttgart on Sunday to prepare for Monday's match
against Tunisia.
"It's not easy to score two goals, but the only thing that match does for me
is help me think about the things I did well and try to repeat them against
Tunisia," Villa said.
Villa scored 25 goals in the Spanish league this season, second only to FC
Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o. Skeptics had questioned whether his style of play
would fit with that of Fernando Torres, who also scored a goal against Ukraine.
"Above all we are satisfied to have shown that those who said we were not
compatible were wrong," Villa said. "We can play together through hard work and
dedication in training."
A win against Tunisia would secure Spain a spot in the second round before
its last group match against Saudi Arabia.
Villa said he was not concerned his height would be a problem against about
Tunisia's tall defense.
"I play against bigger defenders almost every day," the 1.75-meter (5-foot-7)
Villa said. "They will use their weapons and we will use ours."
