Police in Dortmund said on Thursday they had charged 96 people with criminal offences following clashes between German and Polish fans ahead of the match.

A total of 429 fans were detained either because they were known Polish or German hooligans or because their behaviour was aggressive and threatening, police said.

"No one was seriously injured though there were about 32 minor injuries. One policeman was bitten in the calf by a fan," a police spokesman said.

FIFA's Director of Communications Markus Siegler described the action of the hooligans as "absolutely disgusting".

He added: "We had about 2,000 police officers deployed in Dortmund and although it is terrible it happened the police and authorities proved they have the power to deal with these kind of incidents."

Separately, two England fans were arrested in Nuremberg overnight and three others briefly held by police ahead of the World Cup Group B game against Trinidad & Tobago on Thursday.

On Thursday, Group A teams Ecuador and Costa Rica will kick off play in Hamburg at 3 p.m. (1300 GMT), followed by the England-Trinidad & Tobago match and another Group B encounter between Sweden and Paraguay in Berlin.

Brazil's next match is against Australia in Munich on Sunday and coach Carlos Alberto Parreira had said Ronaldo would keep his place in the starting line-up.

Ronaldo bounced back from the 1998 World Cup fiasco to finish as top scorer at the 2002 tournament, netting both goals in Brazil's 2-0 final win over Germany.
