Kawaguchi wants to follow Korea blueprint (Reuters) Updated: 2006-06-15 09:49
BONN, June 14 - Japan goalkeeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi has called on the
Asian champions to follow South Korea's World Cup blueprint for success.
Kawaguchi blamed Japan's cautious approach for their 3-1 defeat by Australia
in their World Cup opener and said the side should try to emulate South Korea's
attacking style.
"Korea aren't afraid to make mistakes. They attack without fear," Japan's
long-time number one told reporters on Wednesday.
"We also need to have that same spirit. We shouldn't be afraid of the result.
If you worry too much about the result you get negative."
South Korea, who reached the semi-finals of the 2002 World Cup as co-hosts
with Japan, won their opening game of this year's tournament with a 2-1 victory
over Togo on Tuesday.
Japan can expect little charity from their next Group F opponents Croatia on
June 18 after they were beaten 1-0 by Brazil in their opening game.
"We have to go in with the feeling we have nothing to lose and take the game
to (Croatia)," said Kawaguchi, who also played in Japan's 1-0 defeat by Croatia
at the 1998 World Cup.
"It felt terrible to lose against Australia. But we just have to make sure we
take it out our frustration on Croatia."
