A Polish daily evoked East Germany's cult Trabant car to raise fans' spirits ahead of Wednesday's World Cup clash against Germany.

The Metro newspaper splashed out a front page picture of the tiny boxy "Trabi" with a banner headline: "The Germans Don't Get Everything Right".

Poles lost 2-0 to underdogs Equador in their first World Cup game and must try to beat Germany on their home turf in Dortmund to avoid a first-round exit from the tournament.

Poland beat East Germany several times during the Cold-War era but have never won a game against Germany or West Germany in 14 attempts.

The Trabant, a symbol of the notoriously inefficient Communist-era industry, has gained an iconic status on the wave of nostalgia for East Germany.
