ROTENBURG, Germany, June 13 - Dwight Yorke's "intimate" relationship
with Rio Ferdinand will count for nothing when he gets even more up close and
personal with his friend during Trinidad and Tobago's World Cup game with
England.
Trinidad captain Yorke will face the England defender and a number of other
friends when he takes the pitch in his team's second Group B game in Nuremberg
on Thursday.
"I have been texting Rio and Gary Neville over the last few weeks and since
our game against Sweden," Yorke told reporters on Tuesday.
"It's mainly banter and wishing each other luck but I won't tell you what was
in Rio's, it's a bit intimate."
But friendships will count for nothing when they are reunited on Thursday,
according to Yorke.
"It will be a special day for me and most of our team who play in England but
we will be out to win, make no mistake," he said.
Trinidad, the tournament's smallest country, are on the verge of creating a
piece of World Cup folklore after holding a much-fancied Sweden in their opening
game.
"We knew we could do something special and we still know we can. Hopefully,
we can perform again as we did against Sweden," Yorke said.
The 35-year-old has been keeping himself fit by training with Ferdinand and
Neville at Manchester United, where he spent four years after signing in 1998.
"It's been really terrific and actually I was just saying that I felt like I
was really back at United. The guys made me so welcome," Yorke said.
Yorke also had a word for England captain David Beckham, also a close friend,
and a former team mate at United.
"Becks is a brilliant player and leads by example. It is great to see him in
such good form," he said of the Real Madrid midfielder with whom he won the 1999
European Championship for United.
"The World Cup needs a great David Beckham."
Trinidad play Paraguay in their final group game, while England will face
Sweden.
