So far, 1,500 teams, each with four players, have signed up for the match. In addition, more than 500 contestants have signed up as video game players for the virtual soccer game.

Soccer fans and players still have a chance to participate by signing up directly at the soccer fields in the coming days, said event organizer Shanghai Sports Bureau.

Former soccer player, former coach of the Chinese national and Shanghai football team, Xu Genbao took the kickoff to open the tournament, named as "Coca-Cola Cup" 3 vs 3 street football challenge games.

The players, between 16 and 24 years old, are divided into teenager groups and adult groups. The winning teams of the city will get a chance to compete in a national championship match in Guangzhou in Guangdong Province.

A team is composed of four players including a substitute.

Preliminary games will be held at the Shanghai University of Sport on Changhai Road of Yangpu District, and the final games will be held at the West Ground of Shanghai Grand Stage on July 1 and 2.

The tournament also has competitions for cheering squads, commentators and umpires. There will be a visual world cup online for the video game players.
