Berlin police confiscate 3,000 'racist' World Cup guides (AP) Updated: 2006-06-09 21:53
Police raided the headquarters of a far-right party in Berlin and confiscated
about 3,000 guides for the World Cup with racist overtones, a spokesman said
Friday.
The guides, produced by the National Democratic Party, known by its German
initials NPD, warned of foreign infiltration into the German national soccer
team, said Michael Grunwald, a spokesman for Berlin prosecutors.
"A racist combination of pictures and texts warned that soon the German team
would be made up almost entirely of black players," Grunwald said.
The raid followed a criminal complaint filed by the German Soccer Federation,
or DFB.
There were no arrests but the matter is still under investigation, Grunwald
said.
Former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's government tried to ban the NPD,
arguing that it incited hate crimes against foreigners and Jews.
But in 2003, Germany's highest court refused to hear the case because the
government cited inflammatory statements by party members who were revealed to
be paid informers for state authorities.
