BERLIN, June 7 - Although only one squad can emerge as World Cup champions, all 735 players involved have a chance of making the All-Star team which will be named two days before the final on July 9.

The All-Star side will be selected by FIFA's 14-man Technical Study Group.

The group includes former players and coaches, among them Teofilo Cubillas, Peru's striker of the 1970s, Roger Milla, Cameroon's four-goal hero of 1990, Jozef Venglos, the former coach of Czechoslovakia, and Francisco Maturana, who coached Colombia in 1994.

To qualify for selection, the player's country must get through to the second round when a short-list of 50 players will be named. The final selection of 23 will be announced on July 7.

John Stuart, senior vice-president of MasterCard International who sponsor the award, said: "Every World Cup is characterised by a select number of footballers who distinguish themselves by elevating their game to an extraordinary level and have a significant impact on the tournament.

"Whether they are a current elite player or a newly discovered star, the MasterCard All-Star team honours these players and helps bring fans closer to the game by fostering debate among fans across the globe as to who deserves to be in the final squad."

All competing 32 nations have 23-man squads except Serbia & Montenegro.

The Serbs are not replacing coach Iliya Petkovic's son, Dusan, after he pulled out in a nepotism row.
