Elephants canter to Slovenia victory (AFP) Updated: 2006-06-05 09:28 BONDOUFLE, France - Ivory
Coast completed their World Cup preparation with a dominant 3-0 victory over an
insipid Slovenia side.
It provided a welcome boost for the Elephants who had been far from
convincing in their two previous warm-up matches, drawing 1-1 with both
Switzerland and Chili.
Talisman Didier Drogba, the Chelsea striker, was at the centre of the Ivory
Coast's attacking forays and scored two goals before Kanga Akale wrapped up a
morale-boosting victory with 20 minutes to go.
The Elephants have been drawn in the toughest World Cup group, C, alongside
heavyweights Argentina and Netherlands and the defensively solid Serbia and
Montenegro.
One advantage they may have is their sheer athleticism which overwhelmed the
Slovenians and allowed them to surpass anything England's Peter Crouch can do as
they performed their own team dance after each of Drogba's two first half
strikes, within a minute of each other.
Ivory Coast begin their World Cup challenge on June 10 against Argentina.
