Spain shrug off concerns about a lack of goals (Reuters) Updated: 2006-05-26 09:32 MADRID, May 25 - Spain's
players have shrugged off concerns that the side will struggle to find the back
of the net in the World Cup finals next month.
"This kind of talk doesn't put us under pressure. We have to be patient and
when we score well, all the better," Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos told a
news conference on Thursday.
Fellow defender Pablo Ibanez backed Ramos's assertions: "We have some great
forwards but it is up to everyone to do their bit when it comes to scoring
goals."
Spain coach Luis Aragones has included three strikers in his squad for
Germany -- captain Raul, Atletico Madrid's Fernando Torres and Valencia's David
Villa -- after the side struggled to put away chances in qualification.
Raul is Spain's all-time leading goalscorer but has been short of form in the
league after suffering a serious knee injury midway through the season. He last
scored for Real back in October.
Torres and Villa will be attending their first World Cup finals and only have
11 goals between them from 32 appearances in the national team.
As part of Aragones's preparations the team have employed the services of a
sports psychologist which has been greeted positively by the players.
"He has been speaking with us individually, helping us relax and adapt
psychologically. He's been a help to me," Ramos said.
Cheslea's Asier del Horno said in sports daily Marca: "He could be important
for the team in particular the younger players like me."
With the side playing a warm-up match against Russia in Albacete on Saturday,
Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso called for the side to put on a show to get the
fans behind the team.
"We need to send a message to the fans," he said."I think that if we play
some good football on the pitch, get some victories that will really get the
fans going."
After Russia, Spain play friendlies against African champions Egypt and
fellow World Cup qualifiers Croatia in Geneva.
They open their campaign against Ukraine on June 14 in Leipzig.
