Wiesbaden - Germany is taking steps to ensure that criminals can be brought to justice swiftly during the football World Cup, a senior justice official said on Wednesday.

A public prosecutor will be on duty at each of the 12 World Cup stadiums and magistrates will be on call around-the-clock to issue arrest warrants, said Dieter Anders.

Anders, prosecutor-general of the state of Hesse where Frankfurt is located, said police would monitor activities in stadiums and fan areas via large screen CCTV.

Anders added that the one major concern remained hooligans who are refused entry to the games and then move into the centre of town.

Germany has stepped up security for the month-long competition, which kicks off June 9
