Costa Rica opens with loss to Catalonia

TERRASSA, Spain - Costa Rica opened its World Cup preparations with a 2-0 loss to a Catalonia select side on Wednesday, allowing a goal in each half and making little impact in the exhibition game before a crowd of 8,155 at Olympic Stadium.

Francisco Medina, who plays for second-division Spanish team Ciudad de Murcia, gave Catolonia the lead in the eighth minute and Roger Garcia added a penalty kick in the 65th minute.

Costa Rica, which was without injured defender Gilberto Martinez, has World Cup warmup games against Ukraine on May 28 and the Czech Republic on May 30. It plays the World Cup opener against host Germany on June 9 and also faces Poland and Ecuador.
