Australia's Aloisi set to miss Greece friendly (Reuters) Updated: 2006-05-23 14:59 MELBOURNE, May 23 (Reuters) -
John Aloisi, whose penalty earned Australia their first place at a World Cup
finals for 32 years, is set to miss the Socceroos' final home warm-up match
before the team heads out to Germany.
The 30-year-old Alaves striker limped out of a training session on Monday
with a foot injury and is poised to join Harry Kewell and Tim Cahill among the
absentees for Thursday's 95,000 sell-out match against Greece at the Melbourne
Cricket Ground.
"I'm quite positive I won't be able to play on Thursday," the former Coventry
and Portsmouth striker told Australian Associated Press.
Aloisi struck the decisive penalty in November as Australia pipped Uruguay
for a place in the finals in a dramatic shootout after their two-leg qualifying
matches finished at 1-1.
Aloisi initially feared he had aggravated a foot injury sustained while
playing for Alaves in the penultimate round of matches in the Primera Liga.
But after treatment with Australia team physiotherapist Les Gelis, Aloiso was
confident he would be fit for the warm-up matches in Europe next month.
"It should be alright for the Holland trip, which is important because I
don't want to get any further injury before I go away," Aloisi said.
The 23-man squad, minus Kewell who is undergoing treatment for a groin strain
in England, will fly to Europe on Friday for tune-up matches against the
Netherlands in Rotterdam (June 4) and Liechtenstein in Ulm, Germany (June 7).
Everton's Cahill has already been ruled out of Thursday's farewell match
against the Greeks but trained with his team mates on Monday and reported
promising progress with his knee injury.
"I've been working really hard on it and I'm more than hopeful it will be
okay by the time we get to (the Netherlands) for the camp," Cahill said.
Australia have been drawn in Group F at the World Cup finals alongside
champions Brazil, Croatia and Japan.
