A gallery specializing in contemporary works of art on paper, the Hadrien de Montferrand Gallery, has opened in the 798 art district of Beijing.

The opening exhibition, dedicated to contemporary Chinese artists, has drawings and watercolors by Liu Xiaodong, photo clippings by Chen Wenbo, pencil drawings by Mao Yan and watercolors by Ding Yi. Other types of works on paper are also presented such as drawings for the Guardian Auction House building by leading Chinese architect Ma Yansong.

"A drawing shows the first outburst, the expression of passion," says gallerist Hadrien de Montferrand, who used to be the marketing director for Artcurial, the largest French auction house.

"It is essential to discover the pictorial roots of Chinese contemporary art which has taken on such importance over the past few years. Whether it is a sketch for an art piece or a work of art in itself, the drawing allows us to witness pure talent".
