Dou Niu

Shanghai:Movie reel

Dou Niu (Cow) is a movie by another sixth-generation Chinese director and is about to hit the international red carpet. Set in the winter of 1940, the movie revolves around Niu Er, a peasant who is tasked with protecting his village's dairy cow. He remains committed to his job through thick and thin, despite whatever fate throws at him - including attacking Japanese troops. Like Nui Er, the movie triumphs in maintaining its sense of humor despite the often bloody and cruel context in which the action takes place.

Directed by Guan Hu, the film stars mainland comic Huang Bo and Yan Ni. It opened yesterday on the mainland and will appear at the Venice Film Festival this weekend.

Tian'an Men

Tian'an Men revolves around a team of stage art workers given the task of renovating the Tian'an Men building a month before the ceremony commemorating the founding of new China. Starring Pan Yueming. Directed by Ye Daying.
