Stephen Chow is making an animated version of CJ7 (Changjiang Qihao), a fantasy film about a boy, his poor father and a cute alien.

The film involves all the old characters but with a new storyline, this one focusing on environmental protection instead of the father-son relationship in the original.

Chow produces the film and will probably speak the father's voice. Calling himself a cartoon lover and fan of Japanese comic books such as Doraemon and Dragon Ball, he says he has long wanted to make children's films.

Hong Kong director Toe Yuan, whose credits include the hit cartoon film My Life as McDull (Maidou Gushi), is on board and the film should hit theaters by spring next year.

CJ7 netted about 200 million yuan ($29.4 million) at the Chinese box office and was one of the most popular films of last year.
