Zhang Yadong’s new ‘green’ album

Chinese music producer Zhang Yadong, best known for producing pop icon Faye Wong’s speculator albums, spoke with chinadaily.com.cn about his latest album Underflow, along with a future album themed on the environment.

Underflow is, in Zhang’s words, “a more underground genre album.” Six years ago he invited his friends Faye Wong, Pu Shu and others to record songs, initially not for commercial release. The making of the album was the most enjoyable for him, because he did it in his own way, and not oriented by business profits.

Zhang then found a trustworthy partner—China Mobile—which provided full copyright protection. The album has been released as a digital download on China Mobile’s website, with a standard CD release to follow (date to be confirmed). Zhang said cooperation with China Mobile has been excellent and the digital release has been a success, despite the fact that digital releases are rarely a good way to sell music in a market full of illegal downloads and pirated CDs.

Zhang’s next music project will be an album with a “green” theme, and is sure to be another hit. He will collaborate with other artists globally in an effort to raise the public’s environmental awareness.
