Big shots aim for $290 million

A $22 million action movie about kungfu heroes who protected Dr Sun Yat-sen, will spearhead a new Chinese film production company.

Hong Kong director Peter Chan and mainland producer Huang Jianxin have joined hands with Polybona International to set up the production company based in Beijing.

Tong Gang, president of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television - the industry's top regulator - and movie mogul Han Sanping, chairman of the China Film Group Corporation, attended a press conference on Sunday. Chan explained why the company is called Cinema Popular. "The word popular implies a wide audience," Chan says. "We will make films that most people would love to see."

The company's first production is Hong Kong director Teddy Chen's Dark October (Shiyue Weicheng).

Starring nine A-list actors from the mainland and Hong Kong, the film will tell the story of how a group of kungfu heroes protected Dr Sun Yat-sen in Hong Kong in 1905, when he was raising money to fight the feudal leaders. Shooting for the film will begin in March in Shanghai. The Shanghai Media Group will also back the production with additional investment.
