Brad Pitt is to assay the role of a go get them journalist in the Hollywood version of the BBC mini-series State of Play. Series writer Paul Abbott confirmed that Pitt would play the role of journalist Cal McCaffrey.

Abbott told BBC Five Live that Pitt would fit well into the role played by John Simm in the TV version of the series. Abbott said he was surprised when he found Pitt at the other end of a mobile phone handed to him by someone.

"I wasn't actually sure he was still interested. I spoke to him on a Blackberry - I just went 'hello' because I wasn't expecting a conversation," he said. "And it was just somebody else going, 'Oh, somebody wants to talk to you', [they] hand me a Blackberry and it's Brad Pitt on the end."

State of Play is a political thriller that tells the story of a team of journalists investigating the death of a political researcher. The film version is backed by Universal and will be directed by Matthew Carnahan.

Pitt is currently in India with partner Angelina Jolie, who is filming A Mighty Heart based on the life of Daniel Pearl, who was killed by terrorists in Pakistan four years ago.
