Beijing's Economic Technological Development Area, or E-town, has focused on ecological improvements since its very beginning, back in 1991, to make itself into a group of strategic industries, an innovation center, and a low-carbon green site by combining an ecology industrial park with manufacturing, and emerging industries to promote energy conservation and a green, low-carbon path.

In 2011, the Commerce, Environmental Protection, and Science and Technology ministries recognized it as a national eco-industrial pilot site.

Last March, when Beijing was shrouded in heavy smog, E-town set up a 100-million yuan ($16-million) fund to support environmental protection in the area by using all its resources, with a committee established to come up with an ecological construction plan for reducing pollution and for improving China's ecological and industrial structure, and the environment around it.
