Former National Grand Hotel

The Former National Grand Hotel was situated at 58 Chifeng Avenue in Heping District. It is the heritage site under city/county protection and the important protection historic architecture in Tianjin and is now used for business.

It used to be one of the most luxury hotels in Tianjin and was built on the land rented from Lu’an Company by a Chinese merchant. In 1926, the Chinese Communist Party held the third Plenary Session of All-China Federation of Railway Workers Unions here and in 1934 Ji Hongchang, the patriotic general, was stabbed and arrested by the agents of KMT in this hotel.

During the War of Resistance against Japan, the secret office of Tianjin municipal Party committee and the liaison location-Knowledge Bookstore were both located here. This three-storied hotel with a floor area of about 6400 square meters was built in 1923, taking up an area of some 3100 square meters. However, it was originally designed as four-storied by Leli Engineering Company.

It is a reinforced concrete inner frame structure construction with a flat roof, overhanging eaves and a gateway supported by Tashkent pillars. Dry walls of red bricks form the decorated exterior of the first floor and plain brick walls are used for the second and third floor. The square windows are decorated with pediments. Two semi-arch arbors are found inside the yard. The building is symmetrical, elegant and spacious.
