Astor House Hotel

Regarded as the important heritage site under state protection and the special protection historic architecture in Tianjin, Astor House Hotel is located at 199 North Jiefang Road, Heping District, covering an area of about 3900 square meters, and about 10500 square meters in floor area. Many great figures have once stayed at the hotel, such as Dr. Sun Yat-sen and Hoover, deceased former president of U.S.

Being the first large-scale hotel operated by the foreigners in the contemporary China, the hotel was founded in 1863 in bungalow-style and expanded to be three-storied hotel in English classical-style in 1884 which was the tallest building in the British concession at that time. Once more in 1929, the Hotel was reconstructed to be four-storied. Both of the buildings have been preserved very well.

The three-storied building at the street corner tastes massive and decent. Its quadrate turret at the turning point was aimed at enhancing visually the vertical sense of the structure. The walls were finished richly but simple. A lot of classical architectural signs were adapted to the designing of the building.
