As tablet personal computers made in Chengdu go abroad, the export of Chengdu's high-tech products advances by leaps and bounds, rapidly becoming Chengdu's new featured products of export.
According to the municipal Bureau of Commerce, Chengdu achieved a total cumulative import and export volume of $11.876 billon from January to May, up 16.05 percent over the same period last year. Exports alone reached $6.404 billion, an increase of 8.03 percent.
Chengdu continued to be the top ranked among Midwest Chinese cities in terms of total volume of imports and exports, and the export volume.
Its export of high-tech products reached $2.379 billion, a growth of 71.24 percent over the same period last year, and the cumulative export of computers and communication technology products amounted to $1.123 billion, an even higher growth of 1333.58 percent over the same period last year.
Annual export of portable computers expected to exceed 20 million
According to a spokesperson for Chengdu's Bureau of Commerce, since Hongfujin Corporation started its production this year, the city has exported 2.4294 million portable computers, while in the same period last year, almost none were exported.
The computers are tablet computers, and their export value reached $1.029 billion, accounting for 16 percent of that of the city.
With the further improvement of Hongfujin's output capacity and the successive start of production by Compal, Wistron and other IT companies, this number will continue to grow rapidly, and it is expected that the city will export more than 20 million computers this year.
Alongside this exponential growth in the export of high-tech products, the export of the city's traditional products also showed growth between January and May: the export of mechanical and electrical products reached $3.725 billion, up 22.37 percent, and the export of pharmaceutical products and agricultural products respectively amounted to $124 million and $163 million, with increases of 51.14 percent and 38.62 percent.
Foreign-invested enterprises gradually become a new force of the export
A large number of transnational enterprises have recently established in Chengdu and this foreign investment is becoming a new force in the cities export industry. From January to May, the cumulative exports of these enterprises reached $2.222 billion, accounting for about 34.7 percent all exports from the city. The cumulative exports of Hongfujin Corporation amounted to $1.029 billion, with exports worth $465 million in May alone. Meanwhile, the cumulative exports of Molex Connector Corporation, Unisem Chengdu Co. Ltd. and Semiconductor Manufacturing International (Chengdu) Corporation respectively reached $65.91 million, $43.24 million and $29.02 million.
Export to traditional markets grows side by side with that to emerging markets
From January to May, Chengdu's exports to its traditional markets of Hong Kong and the United States grew by 65.19 percent and 75.19 percent respectively, and its exports to emerging markets, such as the Bahamas, Poland, Luxemburg, Bahrain and Ecuador, also saw sharp increases. These export figures show traditional markets are growing side by side with emerging markets.
