It is the first time that a firm in the world has realized the production of lithium hexafluorophosphate with hydrofluoric acid-free techniques, breaking the technological bottleneck of electrolyte, a key material for the lithium battery, according to experts attending yesterday’s launching ceremony.

They hold that the new technology has three main advantages. First, the production process of lithium hexafluorophosphate will proceed under normal temperature and pressure. Traditionally, it has to be produced under low temperature and high pressure.

Second, it ensures a substantial increase in product purity. Through the preparation of fine chemicals, the purity of lithium hexafluorophosphate is enhanced remarkably, and low carbon emission is ensured.

Third, the production cost will drop by between one-third and one-quarter thanks to the introduction of environmentally friendly and energy-saving techniques.

According to Huang Ming, chairman of the Chengdu Mufu Biochemistry Science and Technolgoy Co, Ltd, the application of the new technology will completely change the situation that China has to rely highly on imports of electrolyte, lowering the production cost of the lithium battery industry by more than 10 percent.

In a word, it will usher in a new revolution in the lithium battery industry, he said.
