SHANGHAI - Corning, the world's leader in developing large-size glass substrates, aims to expand business in the Chinese market by displaying new products at the ongoing FPD China 2011 show held at the Shanghai New International Expo Center.

"Corning is fully committed to the LCD industry in China, for the country is poised to become the world's largest LCD TV market," said Li Fang, president of Corning Display Technologies China.

The largest Generation 10 glass substrate is a dramatic leap forward in size with approximately 70 percent more surface area than the previous size Generation Eight. It allows for the efficient production of a range of panel sizes, offering superior economies of scale to display manufacturers, said Li.

He said Corning has announced a plan to invest approximately $800 million in Beijing to build a new LCD glass substrate facility which is scheduled to operate in early 2012.

The company, which entered the China market in the early 1980s, has since invested more than $3 billion in building eight manufacturing facilities.

The global market in 2011 is expected to need 3.6 billion to 3.8 billion square feet of glass substrates, he said.

At the show, Corning displayed Eagle XG Slim glass substrate, a thin and environmentally friendly glass product, which is available in glass sizes up to Generation Five at 0.4 mm thickness for portable devices and Generations Seven and Eight at 0.5 mm thickness for TV and large monitors.

"We are also developing 0.3 mm substrates, about the thickness of a business card, to support portable electronic devices," said Li.
