CHENGDU: Li Mengxiao, a 69-year-old farmer from Qinglin Village in Zhihe Town, Pengzhou, a city under the administration of Chengdu, Sichuan Province, travelled a long distance to reach the Sichuan Science and Technology Museum in the center of Chengdu.

“I came here today specially to see the photos displayed in the ‘Chengdu Today Photo Exhibition Dedicated to the 60th Anniversary of the Founding of New China’,” she told www.chinadaily.com.cn

Organized by the Publicity Department of the Chengdu Municipal Party Committee, Chengdu People’s Congress Education, Science, Culture and Health Committee, Chengdu Media Group and Chengdu Daily, the seven-day exhibition will end on September 30.

With more than 300 nice photos, vivid captions and convincing statistics, the exhibition shows the great changes which have taken place in Chengdu since 1949.

But the emphasis is on the great achievements the city has made since China adopted the reform and open policies in 1978, its great achievements since it practiced coordinated urban and rural development six years ago and its post-quake reconstruction since last May in particular, said He Huazhang, chief of the Publicity Department of the Chengdu Municipal Party Committee.

The exhibition consists of seven parts.

The part “Change of the Century” shows the tremendous changes in the city’s urban construction in the six decades, “Coordinated Development” shows the city’s achievements in politics, economy, social development and culture since it practiced coordinated urban and rural development, “Balanced Development” shows the city’s role as the center of commerce, trade and finance and hub of transportation and telecommunications in West China, “Opening to the Outside” shows the city’s close ties with the outside world, and “Charming Districts and Cities” show changes in the districts and cities under its administration in the past six decades.

According to Zhou Mengqi, a famous photographer who is the mastermind of the exhibition, the exhibition has been supported by people from different walks of life.

The photos on display have been chosen from private collection or sent to the exhibition’s organization by different work units in the city.

“Each photo has a story about the history of Chengdu,” Zhou told chinadaily.com.cn.

Since the exhibition started on September 24, it has been overcrowded with visitors each day.

“The exhibition is quite nice because guides tell us stories about each photo,” Li said.
