A press conference to publicize the new artwork was attended by celebrated critics including Chen Xiaoxin and Pi Daojian, as well as reporters from different media outlets. Liu discussed his creative process, his painting career and the influence his home province of Sichuan has on his art.

It took Liu two years to complete The Way to Enlightenment and Freedom. The painting, 16 m in length and 3 m in width, has 180 figures and is considered a magnificent and epic work.

Liu told reporters that thinking and awakening was its theme. The gloomy background represents the great pressure modern life has on people. Anxiety and disorientation were shown through the various figures depicted in the painting.

The highlights of the art work are images of Buddha near the horizon and a lady in white with a tranquil expression on her face in the center of the picture. Liu said the image represents the hope for finding ultimate peace and harmony on earth.

Chen Xiaoxin, a prestigious critic, said Liu is an artist full of social responsibility. "By means of aesthetics, he urges people to find themselves. Liu also utilizes skills of humanism, realism, expressionism and symbolism."  The painting and other works of art will be exhibited as part of the Biennale at the Chengdu New International Exhibition and Convention Center until August 28.
