Updated: 2009-05-22 10:44 The three-year German-China project kicked off in Shenyang, capital of northeastern China's Liaoning province, on May 21.
The opening ceremony was held in Zhongshan Park, in the city center. During the following six weeks, there will be over 100 activities with themes of sustainable urban development, focusing on the fields of economy, science, culture and education. "Shenyang is an old heavy industrial base of China and it lies in a stage of industrial restructuring, so the activities focus more on that," said Michael Kahn-Achermann, project director of the event. The project was launched in 2007, aimed at promoting exchanges in the areas of culture, economy and many other fields. Previous German-China projects have been held in Nanjing, Chongqing and Guangzhou. "The German-China project has a great significance in deepening cooperation between the two [nations] in both economic and cultural areas. We chose Shenyang since it is developing very fast and has great potential," said Michael Schaefer, German ambassador to China. |
