Eighteen people died and seven others were injured in a bus accident in Nanping, southeast China's Fujian province, last Friday afternoon, police said.

The preliminary investigation shows that the tragedy was caused by the bus speeding on the road, which was wet and slippery due to rain.

The vehicle belongs to Fujian Quanzhou Shishi's "Feng Lun (Fujian) Transportation Ltd". Most passengers hail from the Wannian county of Jiangxi province.

After the accident, the Nanping government immediately sent a letter to Jiangxi province and Quanzhou, Fujian province to dispatch a work team to Nanping for the rescue effort, according to Nanping' Under-Secretary-General Mao Xiangdong.

As of 4 pm Saturday, 16 victims’ identities had been confirmed, while two remain unconfirmed. Victims' relatives have been notified, and compensation will be dispatched in accordance with the Supreme People's Court judicial interpretations regarding accident compensation.
