Haikou scaling new heights

After beginning a campaign to improve the environment and enhance the wellbeing of its residents in 2005, Haikou today ranks among the most livable cities in the nation, according to local government.

In April alone, the local government brought medical care, agricultural technology and entertainment to the countryside seven times.

The local health department brought medicines and free treatment to the farmers, delivering pamphlets on health, while legal experts visited to help rural people know more about the law and their rights.

Young volunteers from universities went into local homes to share their advanced agricultural knowledge.

In July, more than 100 children and their parents came to Haikou School of Arts to watch dances and songs.

In the same month, the local government enhanced employee etiquette at a seminar attended by more than 100 workers.

City employees said they will use what they learned in their daily work to help enhance the image of their hometown.

To build a better city, the local government knows that children are essential to the future. More than 150,000 pupils in Haikou not only learn from books but also learn good manners using games as instruction.

At the Yingcai School in Haikou, a chant "to love the motherland, serve the people and uphold science" is often heard in classrooms.

Besides the children, elderly people are also part of the government effort.

About 23 families just made of elderly people were installed buttons near their beds for emergency use. Whenever they press the buttons, the neighbors will come to help.

Local government also handed out cards to the elders, on which list names of stores providing free services and other contact information. The local people call them "love cards".
