Famous Peking duck chain to land in Taiwan, but island birds not fat enough
(Xinhua)
Updated: 2008-12-09 10:44 The mainland's celebrated Peking roast duck chain, Quanjude (Group) Co., Ltd., is set to land its first Taiwan restaurant in the island's southern city of Kaohsiung, but the duck's served will all be from Beijing as the island ducks just aren't fat enough.
Jiang Junxian, the group's chairman, said the Taiwan branch would have to source specially-fed ducks from the mainland to keep the dish's original flavor, as Taiwan's ducks were not fat enough. Quanjude has reached an agreement of cooperation with a Kaohsiung food company during a recent business exploration trip to Taiwan, the group's market development manager surnamed Cao told Xinhua Monday. He expected the restaurant would be well received in Taiwan thanks to its century-old fame, but cautioned that Taiwan customers might have to wait for some time before they could taste the delicacy on the island as the mainland and Taiwan must first sign agreements on personnel entry, work permits and raw material import. Cao said that although he was not sure about the opening time of the restaurant, the location had been basically settled -- the Former Banana Warehouse, a famous local historic building.
