SHANGHAI: The first death of a child from hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) here was confirmed yesterday by the city's health bureau.

The 2-year-old boy, surnamed Yu, died on Saturday, soon after arriving at the Shanghai Public Health Center, it said.

Yu, who was born in Shangshui county in Henan province, had been living with his family in the city's Songjiang district.

He had had a rash on his hands, feet and mouth for three days prior to being sent to the center on Saturday evening.

Doctors there diagnosed him as having HFMD and viral encephalitis.

His condition rapidly became critical and he died a few hours after his arrival, the bureau said.

The case is under investigation, it said.
