Man burned in lab blast

A laboratory assistant suffered serious burns yesterday when a gas bottle exploded at a Shanghai college, fire officials said.

The blast happened at 8 am when the male assistant was preparing for class experiments in a lab at the Shanghai Institute of Technology.

The assistant was sent to hospital suffering from burns to his face, chest and back, but staff said his life was not in danger. The fire was quickly extinguished and no students were reported injured. The incident is being investigated.
