Bitter memory looms in China

School children look at a photo exhibition about Japan's wartime
invasion which is displayed at Marco Polo Bridge on the outskirts of Beijing
July 6, 2007, on the eve of the 70th anniversary of Japan's full-scale invasion
of China. The exhibit coincides with the 70th anniversary of the July 7, 1937
skirmish at the Marco Polo Bridge near Beijing, which sparked an all-out war
between China and Japan. Ties between the neighbours have been strained by
Tokyo's refusal to acknowledge atrocities committed by Japanese soldiers in the
country between 1931 and 1945. [Reuters]
